"For Santorini, the volcano is both creator and destroyer. It shaped the character of the civilization which developed on the island and which continues to flourish there" - Christos Doumas, Director of Akrotiri Excavations
The catastrophic 1956 earthquake, with epicentre the island of Amorgos, destroyed or rendered uninhabitable over 80% of the island's structures. Hardest hit were Oia, Fira-Firostefani and Imerovigli, and much of what you see today is a result of loving restoration.
